Women's Recap

The Big East Championships’ biggest performance came from Providence’s Emily Sisson, who set the indoor collegiate 5,000m record at 15:12.22. Kim Smith, who also ran for Providence, held the previous record of 15:14.18.

“I was going to go out at about 15:36 pace and maybe just see if I could close a little bit quicker,” said Sisson whose previous personal best was 15:21.84. “During the last 400 I knew as long as I finished decently I could get (the record), so I just tried to enjoy it.”

Stephanie Schappert won the mile in 4:41.69 and helped Villanova’s 4x800m relay team win the race for the fourth year in a row (8:33.94).

“It was exciting to come out here and get the win at The Armory,” said Schappert after the relay. “We feel like The Armory is our home track and we’re used to it, so it was a great run out there by all four ladies.”

Georgetown’s Sabrina Southerland won the 1000m in 2:46.18 ahead of Siofra Cleirigh Buttner, who finished in 2:47.25.

In the 60m hurdles, Villanova’s Shanice Grant and Emerald Walden took first and second in 8.47 and 8.56, respectively.

Xavier of Ohio’s Maggie Barrie, who is a true freshman, surprised the 60m dash field with a 7.68 win over Varonica Johnson of Villanova (7.69).

“I’m really honored and thankful for my coaches, teammates and dad,” said Barrie. “I came here with a lot of goals and wouldn’t be able to do this without them.”

Pariis Garcia of St. John’s stopped the clock at 54.89 to record a win in the 400m. She also took second in the 200m (24.72) before anchoring her 4x400m relay team to a 3:45.60 victory.

“I worked really hard leading up to today,” said Garcia who also anchored her 4x400m relay team to a victory at last month’s NYRR Millrose Games. “I’m just glad I was able to go out there and put everything on the track.”

Samantha Nadel of Georgetown and Butler’s Mara Olson were neck-and-neck around the final turn of the 3,000m, but it was Nadel who was able to cross the finish line first with a big personal best of 9:05.97.

“During the last straightaway I was gaining momentum and feeling really strong, so I thought just go for it,” said Nadel.

Villanova’s Angel Piccirillo won the 800m by a large margin. Her time of 2:04.98 ranks within the nation’s top 20 times. She may have ran even faster had she not had to compete in the 4x800m relay shortly after, where she helped Villanova break the meet record in 8:33.94.

“It was exciting to come out, get the record, run fast and just represent Villanova,” said Piccirillo after the relay.

Villanova’s Alexandria Wasik cleared 4.05m (13’ 3.50”) to win the pole vault.

Jazmyne Durrah of DePaul won the shot put with a mark of 13.59m (44’ 7”). Maya Marquette’s Maya Marion was second with 13.25m (43’ 5.75”).

Kathrine Petruzzelis won the pentathlon with 3723 points.

Xavier of Ohio’s Mercedes Oliver took the weight throw with a toss of 18.67 (61’ 3”).

Villanova won the Big East Championships in team scoring with 109 points, St. John’s was second with 87 points and Marquette third with 76 points.

Men’s Recap

Despite a slow start, Ivy Dobson of DePaul was able to reel the field in for a 6.90 victory in the 60m dash.

“I had a long day yesterday, so I didn’t fully recover before the race,” said Dobson. “But I felt good and the competition was great, so I’m happy.”

For the 500m, Nate Gordon of Georgetown’s 1:03.51 effort was good enough to hold off Villanova’s Ishmael Muhammad who finished in 1:03.91.

It was a heated race between Elliot Slade of Villanova and Georgetown’s Amos Bartelsmeyer in the 800m. The crowd helped the two push their way around the final lap, but it was Slade who was able to hold on for the 1:48.91 win over Bartelsmeyer’s 1:49.63.

Despite it being his first race of the season, Patrick Tiernan of Villanova, a native of Australia, won the 5000m in 14:18.04 ahead of Providence’s Shane Quinn, who ran 14:19.53.

“That last K or so was a shock to the system, but I’m really happy with the result,” said Tiernan.

Jordan Williamsz, also a native of Australia, won the 3,000m for Villanova in 8:17.58. Tiernan took second in 8:18.73 and Robert Denault, also of Villanova, was third in 8:19.02.

Georgetown’s Ryan Manahan went 4:10.79 to take the mile before Providence’s Julian Oakley, who finished in 4:11.13.

Villanova impressed The Armory crowd with their 7:30.61 finish in the 4x800m relay. Georgetown was second in 7:31.48. Georgetown, however, went on to win the 4x400m relay in 3:16.11.

Wally Ellenson of Marquette soared over 2.22m (7’ 3.25”) to win the high jump.

Joel Swanberg of Marquette won the pole vault with 6.39m (20’ 11.75”) while competing in the pentathlon, which he also won with 4787 points.

Elbert Maxwell of Villanova hit the board well to record a mark of 7.43m (24’ 4.50”) for the win in the long jump. Dwayne Dash was second with a 7.12m (23’ 4.50”).

Trevor Kintyhtt of DePaul had the furthest mark in the weight throw with 18.66m (62’ .5”). Marquette’s William Koeck was second with 18.58m (60’ 11.5”).

Villanova won the Big East Championships in team scoring with 201.5 points, Marquette finished second with 133.50 points, and Georgetown third with 148 points.
